Mine is set in Miami, so Spanish kind of goes with the territory. :-) I wrote it a while ago for the Tricks and Treats anthos, but we decided to expand it to a novella instead, and I’m glad we did.

I'm assuming this is a fairly shallow well (drinking water wells are usually required to be below 250 or 500 feet). You'd need something fairly catastrophic for shallow ground water to completely disappear since it will be linked in some way shape or form to a body of surface water, like a river or lake. Rate of absorption would depend on the type of soil (clay=slow, sand=fast) and the surrounding water bodies.
