Update! Giveaway!

Okay, my bad. It appears that there won’t be pre-order capability for WRONG WAYS DOWN because, well, the systems don’t allow it. By which I mean Amazon etc. aren’t set up to allow pre-order capability on self-published books. That’s the info we’re getting, at least–if anyone knows anything different, do let me know.

So, no pre-orders, and my apologies. As you all know I’m quite new with all this self-publishing stuff, so…hopefully next time (if there is one) it’ll be smoother. I feel really bad about this, guys.

However. This does NOT affect the August 6th release date, with which there shouldn’t be any problems. That has indeed been confirmed in the system(s), so everything is ready to go there. It just means the convenience of pre-ordering isn’t there, which does suck.

How about a giveaway instead? Comment on this post. Here, on the blog (NOT on the Goodreads “copy” of it or any of the various feeds; the link back to here should be on them, but just in case, it’s here.) And, let’s see…say in your comment…well, anything about the books, or the characters. If you have any questions you want answered or there’s anything you think would be an interesting blog post about the WWD, anything you want to know about, let me know in your comment.

You can get additional entries by tweeting about the book on Twitter (#wrongwaysdown OR #terriblefever), and/or by Sharing it and/or commenting on Facebook.

I’ll give away a couple of ebook copies (I don’t have ppb to give away, sorry). I’ll pick random numbers and announce the winners; winners will have 24 hours to contact me to tell me what format they want. If you don’t contact me within that time, you forfeit, sorry, and I pick someone else.

Contest will end tomorrow at noon EDT (it is currently about five til, so that’s basically twenty-four hours).

This is an international contest. And hopefully it’ll be fun.

 I can’t wait to get my hands on Terrible’s words. He is such a sweet giant and yet a monster made by the streets. I guess she is too.
I was wondering if you had an early model for him when you first started developing his character ? A real person, a character in a movie/book ?

No, I don’t generally model my characters on actual people. Sometimes afterward I’ll see a resemblance to someone (like, I’ll come across a picture or someone will show me one and I’ll think, “Yeah, that’s not too far off,”) but their actual faces are always just made up in my head.

And of course the characters aren’t modeled on anyone, or on anyone else’s characters. :)

That sucks about the pre-order. But I rarely read anything other than e-books anyways. Otherwise, I would be living in a library. And they have yet to run out of e-books :p Love your books. :)

    Thank you for the contest.

As a kid, I used to identify with the male characters in scify, so you can imagine my pleasure in discovering that Andre Norton was a girl like me…

Now, at the age of 64, it is an absolute delight to spend my time in worlds with authors being successful able to write about strong women in protaganist roles. Thank you.

In addition, my wife and I quite enjoy bedtime after I’ve finished certain chapters… Thank you for that, too! :-)

I have been seriously jonesing for a new Downside book. (If there was a “strung out” emoticon here I would use it..) Thank you for giving us a series with “real” characters, people with limitations and reasonable flaws.

Do you have any plans to go into Chess’s background? Who her parents were and why they may have left her? Or a snippet of a current Church employees POV – do they think The City is terrifying, too, but can’t admit it? Are they really “good” or was Haunted Week caused by them so they could come to power? Having The City already there seems like too good of luck..

Terrible looks like the actor Vinnie Jones in my head, btw. Way off?

Saw the giveaway on Twitter, can’t wait for WWD!!

I’ve never read a UF book with an unattractive looking hero. Was there a reason behind making Terrible genuinely ugly?

I think only a talented writer can manage to make their ugly hero swoony and attractive through their personality. I get so sick of all the super hot UF heroes who are only sexy because of their looks and not their attitude. Terrible is refreshing.

    Hi Stacia,

I discovered your books on the way to South America last year and I was addicted…any free moment I had during the trip was spent reading the Downside series. Do you plan on getting more into the politics behind the Church? It’s been hinted that there might be a connection between what happened in 1997 and the rise of the Church….

This series is in my top 5 favorite series. I love it because it is unlike anything I have ever read. It’s dark, gritty, so emotional, sexy and yet at times hilarious. It takes me through the gamut of my emotions which so few novels can do and I love it. Chess and Terrible are far from your average hero and heroine and that’s what makes them so intriguing. I can’t wait to read this story and get into the yummy Terrible’s head.

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Terrible, but I also have a soft spot in my heart for Lex. I think I’ve got that whole “He’s a bad boy, but love can redeem him,” thing going on.

What I’d like to know is, will we ever find out what Lex’s true feelings for Chess are? Whether she really was just a warm body to him or whether she was more?

He seemed genuinely hurt when she broke up with him. That was a tough scene for me because I was equally thrilled for Terrible and sad for Lex.

You know what I’m looking forward to? A drug-free Chess. I mean, I know that Chess has her problems, like we all do, but in the end don’t we all want the same thing. Not a happily-ever-after but at the very least a not-so-miserable-ever-after. I think that without the drugs, Chess wouldn’t be all that different, violent mood swings excluded, Chess would still probably be the neurotic, OCD, insecure, bad-ass we all know and love. I just hope she can let go of her past enough to save her, likely, rotting body.

Hi Stacia! I’m so glad that I discovered your books! I think the world you create is real and raw, and it works perfectly with the characters. It’s really wonderful to be able to relate to a main female character that isn’t perfect, and has deep emotion and flaws just like the rest of us girls. I’m sure that writing these stories is a huge process, but I wish we could get the Downside books faster! But thats just the fanatic in me, sorry. I’m a fan for life now.
